Sunday 29th November – Oxford Women’s Epee Team places 6th in National Team Championships
Oxford fencers Caryl Oliver and Sam Hughes joined forces with friend of Oxford Nicola Broad-Bartlett to compete in the National Team Championships at the Leon Paul Centre on Sunday 29 November – team armourer and cheerleader was Anne Mills.
Other teams comprised fencers from the very top of the National Rankings and all matches were fiercely fought. In the pool round Oxford beat Queensgate 1 (45-24) but lost to Tornadoes (30-45).
In the tableau of 16 Oxford got Queensgate 1 again! They certainly lifted their game but could not quite prevail so Oxford moved into the top 8 (43-40). The next match against Truro was a challenge too great for the Oxford team as Truro was one of the favourites and boasted a team full of top 10 ranked fencers! Oxford fought hard and scored some great hits but finally went down 19-45 to the eventual Bronze Medallists – a score that did not reflect the intensity of the match.
Harrogate Fencing Club and Kenilworth Swords took Gold and Silver. The final position of 6th was a good outcome in that company and it was an enjoyable day of fencing.
BB&O County Epee Championships (15 Nov 2015)
Mark Leech faced Dean Miniken in the semi-final of the BB&O County Epee Championships at Moulsford School on 15 November. Mark eventually made it through to the final and finished with the silver medal, while Dean took bronze.
